The fire and rescue service says it's responded to a fire at the Northern Civic Amenity site this morning, Saturday, March 21.
It's thought to have been caused by flares which were thrown away among the burnable waste, and was quickly put out.
Firefighters say it's a reminder to make sure you dispose of flares and other hazardous waste like batteries responsibly, and not in general waste.
The emergency service says the tip at Balladoole will be closed for a short time while staff make it safe to reopen.
