Driver to pay compensation to car crash victim after Mountain Mile collision

24-year-old Christopher Wells was also sentenced to 200 hours of community service at Douglas Courthouse on Friday. 

 

He had previously pleaded guilty to one charge of causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care and consideration. 

 

On October 11th last year Wells crashed his Renault Clio at speed on the Mountain Mile - he crossed the carriageway, travelling sideways, before colliding with a Skodia Octavia. 

 

A police officer who witnessed the collision said he could see the car had "fully lost control" - the backseat passenger in the second vehicle sustained fractured ribs and a ruptured diaphragm. 

 

Addressing the court Wells' advocate said he was a young man who was "genuinely sorry" for his actions, adding that a "lesson had been learnt" and he hadn't driven since. 

 

Sentencing him Deemster Montgomerie told Wells he accepted he was deeply affected by his "serious lapse of judgement" but said it was a "serious crash with serious consequences". 

 

Wells was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and has to pay prosecution costs of £500.
