The Department of Infrastructure is asking motorists not to ignore crossing signals on the Mountain Road.
On Facebook, it says motorists must stop at the crossing at the Bungalow when the red lights come on.
It says when even the overhead cables are down, the tracks are in use.
At present, a yellow rail car is needed to service masts at the summit, and trams are doing test runs and maintenance before the new season gets underway.
