The Department of Infrastructure says it doesn't know how much its coastguards are paid.
A Freedom of Information request asked for the total wage cost of the service, which falls under the DoI's harbours division.
In its response, the department said it doesn't have the information asked for - only how many hours were worked.
It added salaries and wages fall under the government's Office of Human Resources.
