DEFA Minister reacts to possible new Nuclear Power Station plans for Sellafield

Minister Shimmin expresses dissapointment at plans for new Nuclear Power Station

Yesterday saw the UK Government reveal 8 potential sites for new nuclear power stations across the country, with three of them in close proximity to the Isle of Man.

The possible sites causing concern are those identified in Heysham, Sellafield and Anglesey.

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister John Shimmin has said he is particularly disappointed that Sellafield has been identified as a location.

He said given the close proximity to the existing reprocessing plant there is the danger that if there is a problem in one facility it could have a knock on to the other.

The Minister has called the move a necessary evil for the UK’s energy policy, and concedes there is no way of ensuring safety at a Nuclear Power Plant.
