Cycle helmets won't be made compulsory

Cyclists will not be forced to wear helmets when cycling on Manx roads.

That's despite new legislation being brought forward which will introduce regulations about wearing the headgear.

The Road Traffic Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2016 is currently being reviewed by a committee of Legislative Council.

It will allow the department to introduce rules for the wearing of helmets however it says it has no 'immediate plans' to make it mandatory.

The DOI says it will continue to monitor the situation as the safety of road users is 'clearly of paramount importance'.
