Campaign launched to target drivers on mobile phones

Police and the Department of Infrastructure are getting tough with people who use their mobile phones whilst driving.

Last year, almost 40 crashes on the Island's roads were caused by distracted drivers.

A new awareness campaign has been launched this week.

The maximum fine for people who arecaught on the phone whilst behind the wheel is £2500 and four penality points.

The cost of a hands-free kit is around £30 and Road Safety Manager Gordon Edwards says that's a massive saving on a fine.

He recommends not using your mobile at all whilst driving or diverting it to voicemail.
