It’s been confirmed today that Manx-registered ships sailing in dangerous waters will now be able to carry armed security onboard.
Speaking to 3FM, director of the Ship Registry Dick Welsh said the decision had come about following numerous discussions with his UK counterparts.
He said the shipping trade in African waters had become an increasingly dangerous affair and this move was necessary.
Mr Welsh said that, do date, no ship carrying armed security had been attacked by pirates, which included some 400-plus Manx-registered ships (see audio).
