Fire service callouts to schools cost the Department of Education, Sport and Culture more than £19,000 last year.
The figures have been given in response to a Freedom of Information request which asked for details on emergency callouts to schools.
In its response, the department said the Fire and Rescue Service had been called to schools 49 times - four of which were related to smoking or vaping.
And the Department of Home Affairs had charged £19,053.50 for the callouts.
