Ramsey Bay becomes marine nature reserve

The reserve will endeavour to protect marine life, safeguard local fisheries whilst providing Ramsey with a chance to market the town as a centre of marine tourism.

Ramsey Bay has been designated as the Isle of Man's first Marine Nature Reserve.

The reserve will endeavour to protect marine life, safeguard local fisheries whilst providing Ramsey with a chance to market the town as a centre of marine tourism.

DEFA Minister John Shimmin has commended the project, saying it will provide an important replenishment area for local fisheries, aswell as maintaining and protecting essential marine habitats.

The scheme is seen as the culmination of 3 years work looking into suitable locations for such a reserve.

Its been formulated in compliance with local fisherman, with the guidelines stating that trawling and dredging will not be permitted within the Conservation Zone.

When first proposed, the idea of the nature reserve produced 85% positive feedback from the public consultation.
