Jail for teenager who raped 10-year-old boy

A teenager from Ramsey has been jailed for six years and six months after admitting raping a 10-year-old boy.

19-year-old Aiden McMahon sexually assaulted the child in his bedroom at his home on Clifton Drive on April 7th last year.

At Douglas Courthouse today McMahon was told he’d “exploited” the victim’s vulnerability and “betrayed the trust” of his parents.

The court heard McMahon had taken the child, who can’t be named for legal reasons, out for the day after claiming he’d won a prize allowing free travel on the Island’s railways.

After disembarking in Ramsey McMahon took the boy to his home where he made him have a bath – he then told him it was ‘a rule’ to get undressed and into bed.

The court was told it took five months for the victim to reveal what had happened – when he did police arrested McMahon; they later discovered no such travel prize had existed.

McMahon, who was 18 at the time, pleaded guilty to rape – in his basis of plea he admitted he’d carried out a “terrible offence” but claimed it wasn’t pre-mediated.

During sentencing McMahon’s advocate told the court he was a “confused and emotionally ill-equipped boy” and not a “callous sexual predator” adding he was “rightly ashamed of his actions”.

Jailing the teenager Deemster Montgomerie told him “You knew your victim well, you used that knowledge to get him naked and into your bed where you then raped him”.

An extended sentence for licence purposes was imposed – McMahon will also be on the Sex Offenders Register, and be the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, until further notice.
