Full road reconstruction would cost £100 million

Over the next year £3.7 million will be spent on road maintenance, with roughly £1 million going on surface dressing.

The Department of Infrastructure have conducted a major review into the Island’s roads and the damage they sustained due to the cold weather over the past two years.

As a result of the cold snap highway defect-reporting rose to a peak of nearly 500 cases per month, compared to more typical levels of around 100.

The more immediate damage has now been taken care of, however many of the roads remain in a very fragile condition.

It’s been established that out of the 650 miles of road network approximately 200 miles require reconstruction; it's estimated that would cost close to £100 million, an unrealistic given the current economic climate.

Over the next year £3.7 million will be spent on road maintenance, with roughly £1 million going on surface dressing.
