Wind farm plans scrapped for 'Round 3 Irish Sea Zone'

Celtic Array has withdrawn plans for wind farms in the Irish Sea.

A request has been accepted by the Crown Estate from Centrica and DONG Energy, operating as Celtic Array, to ditch the offshore wind farm agreement for the 'Round 3 Irish Sea Zone'.

In a statement a spokesperson for DONG Energy said that ground conditions "were not viable" for it to proceed with available technology.

It means the work on the development has come to a permanent halt terminating the company's seabed rights.

The decision has been welcomed by both air and sea travel providers here who say the plans may have threatened vital maritime lifelines and flight radar signals.

It's reported that Centrica will be hit with a £40 million charge as a result of the decision.
